Hello to all my Grade Prep students from Cambridge Primary School and whoever else might be reading this post.

 

This is week 5 of Term 3 2020 and all my Prep students are remote learning at home!

We are going to be doing a bit of Visual Arts learning around the topic of  self portraits!

In week 2 I asked you to draw a self portrait after watching a video.

In week 3 I asked you to draw a monochromatic self portrait after watching another video.

I have made folders on your grade’s Class Dojo  or Seesaw page for you to upload photos of your self portraits for Week 2 and Week 3. These photos are evidence that you have completed this work.

Here are the instructions for the Prep Specialists Rich Task.

If you have already completed your Specialists Rich Task you can skip this bit. On the audio file you can press the fast forward button.

This Rich Task will require some thinking and some organising. You will need time to complete it. So the Grade Prep Rich Task should be uploaded to your grade’s Class Dojo or Seesaw folder or portfolio by the end of WEEK 6!

For this Prep Specialists Rich Task, you will need to create a self portrait using “stuff” from around your house. 

NO DRAWING!

Label your facial features in English and Italian.

You also need to create an animal face.

NO DRAWING!

Label the facial features of the animal in Italian and English.

Photograph your self portrait and your animal face using your device.

How will you complete this self portrait and animal face without drawing?

What will you use to create this rich task?

 

You will be using things that you already have at home.

 You have lots of CHOICE with how you create your self portrait and animal face.

Perhaps you will create your self portrait with counters or blocks

or  with lego

 

or with stuff from the kitchen cupboard

or cut pieces of paper

or paper plates

or wool or string

or fabric scraps

or playdoh and pasta

or stuff out of the laundry basket

 

or you could use some of these things

or all of these things

or something I haven’t even listed!

You could even use yourself as part of a huge self portrait like this person!

I am giving you lots and lots and lots of choice 

in how you create your rich task

I am NOT telling you to go out and buy new art materials or things to use!

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

You need to THINK about what you already have at HOME and HOW you can use it.

 

Now STOP!

Before you start running around your house like a crazy person collecting objects let’s think about this.

I do not want you touching any objects that don’t belong to you without permission.

 

I also want you to know and understand that all good artists clean up after themselves.

So, every single thing that you use in your rich task has to be put away properly and correctly after you have finished photographing it.

I cannot wait to see what you create!

Your VISUAL ARTS TASK FOR WEEK 5 is to write a comment on my blog about the story.

It is easy to write a comment on my blog. Don’t forget to use capital letters and full stops.

At the end of this blog post you will find a section titled,

LEAVE A COMMENT (or add a comment if nobody else has written one yet!)

Under that is a large box in which you type your comment. It looks like this. You can’t write in this one, Silly. You have to use the box at the bottom of this post.

After you have written your comment there is an anti spam box. The anti spam box is there to prove you are a real person not just a computer bot generating random comments. You need to copy the text from the anti spam box into the other box, just like in the photo below.

 

Then you type your name into the name box. Don’t forget to tell me which grade you are in.

In the next box you type your email address. If you don’t have an email address then you can ask someone from your family if you can use their email address.

Hello to all my Grade 1 students from Cambridge Primary School and whoever else might be reading this post.

This is week 4 of Term 3 2020 and all my Grade 1 students are remote learning at home!

We are going to be doing a bit of Visual Arts learning around the topic of  colour!

 

  •  To revise the order of the colours of the rainbow.

  • To read along with Mrs Menhennet as she reads the blog post aloud.

  • To introduce the instructions for the Specialists Rich Task.

  • I know the order of the colours in the rainbow.

  • I can play the audio function  on the blog post and read along with Mrs Menhennet.

  • I understand the instructions for the Specialist Rich Task.

    Let’s get started!

In Week 2 I asked you to draw a rainbow scene including the colours of the rainbow in order.

Last week (week 3) I asked you to create a rainbow from found objects.

 

I have made folders on your grade’s Class Dojo page for you to upload photos of your creations for Week 2 and Week 3. These photos are evidence that you have completed this work.

Here are the Instructions for the Specialists Rich Task.

This Rich Task will require some thinking and some organising. You will need lots of time to complete it. So the Grade 1 Rich Task should be uploaded to your grade’s ClassDojo portfolio by the end of WEEK 6!

 

For this Grade 1 Specialists Rich task, you will create a character called ROY.G.BIV.

ROY G BIV needs to have a body.

A part of  ROY.G.BIV’s body must be in RAINBOW ORDER like his name.

ROY.G.BIV’s body also needs to include at least one PATTERN

You need to label ROY.G.BIV’s body  in Italian and English.

What is  ROY.G.BIV’s  name in Italian?

Use digital technology to enhance your rich task. You might use Keynote or another creative app or other digital tools you know how to use. You might photograph or video your rich task as you create it.

What will you use to create this rich task?

In the past, in the art room, my students have created ROY G BIV like this.

This artwork involved  –

  • Drawing a large face for ROY G BIV

  • Using coloured strips of paper for his hair in ROY G BIV order

He has also been created like this.

This artwork involved  –

  • Drawing a LARGE head, neck and shoulders for ROY G BIV to fill the space on the paper. (If I wanted you to draw ROY G BIV really small I would tell you to create your rich task on a tiny post it note!) DRAW BIG!

  • Using coloured strips of paper for his hair in ROY G BIV order

  • painting different parts of his body in particular colours

  • cutting out his mouth and giving him a colourful tongue

In this time of remote learning, as artists,  we are not working in the art room.

In this time of remote learning, as artists, we all have to adapt  and change to creating at home.

So you won’t be able to create your ROY G BIV in exactly the same way that it has been made before.  And that really doesn’t matter. You will all be brilliantly creative artists at home!

So I am giving you  lots of CHOICE with how you create your ROY G BIV.

So perhaps you will draw with oil pastels or pencils or textas or crayons

or paint with a brush

or paint with  sponges

 

or print with objects

or paint with watered down food colouring

or use play doh

or make your own play doh or salt dough

Salt Dough Recipe

Ingredients

  • I cup salt
  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1 cup hot water

Method

  1. Add salt and plain flour to a bowl gradually adding hot water. You might not need all the water!
  2. Mix together until a dough forms. Make sure it isn’t sticky.
  3. Leave your salt dough creations to air dry overnight. Then put your salt dough creations in the oven at 120 degrees Celsius for about 3 hours.
  4. When your salt dough creations are cool you can paint them. If you don’t have gloss paint and you want them to look shiny you can paint them with varnish when the paint is dry. If you don’t have any varnish just paint them with PVA glue. This will also make them nice and shiny.

in how you create your rich task

Don’t forget to ask permission to pull stuff out of cupboards to use, or to make salt dough, or things like that.

Hello to all my Grade PREP students from Cambridge Primary School and whoever else might be reading this post.

This is week 3 of Term 3 2020 and all my Prep students are remote learning at home!

 

We are going to be doing a bit of Visual Arts learning around the topic of  self portraits !

Last week I asked you to draw a self portrait after watching a video.

I hope you kept last week’s self portrait somewhere nice and safe. You will need to submit last week’s self portrait as evidence of your completion of this unit of work when you submit your Specialists Rich Task.

 Instructions for the Specialists Rich Task will be forwarded to you soon.

 

 

We are going to be drawing a new self portrait soon so you will need some paper,

 

some pencils,

or crayons,

or textas.

Some people call textas, markers.

And I would really like it if you had a small mirror so you can look at yourself.

So I am going to give you a little bit of time to organise yourself.

I will just sit here on my blog and wait for you to collect some pencils and textas, some paper and, hopefully, a mirror.

If you don’t have a small mirror you can use to look at yourself perhaps you can move yourself to draw on the floor  somewhere in your house, maybe in the bathroom, where there is a big mirror,

so you can use the big mirror to look at yourself.

So I will just wait until you are ready……..

Oh, you are ready already! That was so fast! Well done!

So while you were getting ready to draw I found a beautiful story to share with you so let’s watch the video.

If you need to stop the video at anytime you can just press the pause button and then come back to the story.

PART 2 READ ALONG WITH MRS MENHENNET

Oh, that was a lovely story called “The Colour of Us”  written and illustrated by Karen Katz.

I thought the illustrations were just gorgeous. Karen Katz is a very clever author and artist. She wrote the story about her daughter Lena and a conversation they had one day when they went out for a walk.

Now I would like you to get your small or big mirror

and have a very good look at your face!

Today you are again going to draw a SELF PORTRAIT but it will be a bit different this time.

Today you are going to draw a MONOCHROMATIC

SELF PORTRAIT.

 

Yes, it’s a very big word – monochromatic.

I want you to say that long word after me – monochromatic.

Let’s try it again – monochromatic.

 

Now I want you to say after me  – monochromatic self portrait.

Well done!

If we break the word up the mono part means one and the chromatic part means colour. So now you are going to watch a video made by a very clever art teacher called Cassie Stephens.

She is going to show you some self portraits painted by artists and then show you how to draw a monochromatic self portrait.

In the video she talks to her students about using a very small piece of paper. You can use whatever size paper you have.

In the video she uses a thin black texta to start her drawing. You can use one if you like but you could also use a black pencil.

PART 3 READ ALONG WITH MRS MENHENNET.

In the video Cassie decides to do her monochromatic self portrait using green.  These are monochromatic self portraits that were done by some of Cassie’s students.

You don’t have to choose green but whatever colour you choose you need to have several lights and darks of that colour.

I hope you have fun drawing your monochromatic self portrait.

You don’t have to submit your drawing this week. Again, I would like you to keep your drawing nice and safe. You will  then submit this week’s monochromatic self portrait as evidence of your completion of this unit of work when you submit your Specialists Rich Task.

This is week 2 of Term 3 2020 and all my Prep students are at home!

This is not the way I usually work with Prep students to teach them about Visual Arts but we will be doing this for a few weeks until it is safe to attend school again.

Until then, we will be learning like this – online – using my blog!

You have probably seen me at school. You might even have met me when I have been on Yard Duty or I have visited your classroom.

Yes, it’s me – Mrs Menhennet! Most Cambridge Primary School students that know me, recognise me with my multicoloured hair!!!

Cambridge Primary School Prep students always ask me, “Mrs Menhennet, how come you have all those colours in your hair?”

And I always tell them, “I don’t know. It just grew like that!”

 

We are going to be doing a bit of Visual Arts learning around the topic of  self portraits !

What is a self portrait?

A portrait is a picture of a person.

A SELF portrait is a picture of ??????????

Yes, that’s right – a self portrait is a picture of yourself!

Okay, we are going to be drawing a self portrait soon so you will need some paper,

 

some pencils,

or crayons,

or textas.

PART 2 READ ALONG WITH MRS MENHENNET

 

Oh, that was a fun story about all sorts of faces.

Now I would like you to get your small or big mirror

and have a very good look at your face!

Can you see your beautiful eyes?

What colour are they?

Can you see your eyelashes?

Are they light or dark?

Are they short or long?

Are they curly or straight?

Can you see your eyebrows?

Are your eyebrows neat and tidy or crazy and all over the place?

Eyebrows are great for adding expression to your face.

What do your eyebrows do when you make an angry face?

What happens to your eyebrows when you make a surprised face?

Noses come in all shapes and sizes. It’s amazing how different they can be.

 

Mouths can also be very different.

 

Have you got all of your teeth?

Or are some of your teeth missing?

Now it’s time for you to draw your self portrait. I want you to draw a picture of you!

 

Have fun and have a positive attitude about your drawing. We are just practising!

Your celestial bodies final artwork is due on Monday 24th May 2020!

You must submit all your artworks (rough draft of four/2 ideas/final celestial bodies artwork) or your report for Semester 1 will state NEEDS ATTENTION in the Visual Arts section.

I can’t believe it is Week 6 of remote learning already!

We are going to be doing a bit of Visual Arts learning around the topic of CELESTIAL BODIES in ART!

So, in Week 3 you drew a rough draft of four different celestial bodies. If you didn’t do this work go to week 3 here.

And in Week 4 you drew 2 ideas for a celestial bodies artwork. If you didn’t do this work go to week 4 here.

Now, in Week 5 and week 6, I would like you to create your final artwork for this unit of work. I want you to create a celestial bodies final artwork.

This artwork will require some thinking and some organising. So this artwork is due on Monday 24th May 2020!

In the past, my grade 3 students have created a celestial bodies artwork using clay like this.

This artwork involved-

  • deciding which of the celestial bodies you were going to create with

  • deciding how the celestial bodies were going to interact if the student was using more than one type of celestial body

  • deciding whether the celestial bodies claywork was going to be 3D and freestanding or flat

  • painting the claywork after it came out of the kiln

But you won’t be making a celestial bodies clay work in the art room.

In this time of remote learning we all have to adapt to creating at home.

How can you produce an artwork that has more than one celestial body in it? How can you put them together? Or perhaps you just want to create one of the celestial bodies? What will you use?

So you have lots of choice with how you create your celestial bodies artwork. However I want you to use more than one sort of material or one way of creating your art work. You have choices to make!

We are going to be doing a bit of Visual Arts learning around the topic of CELESTIAL BODIES!

 

If you haven’t done the Week 3 activity yet please go back to Week 3 HERE.

Did you email your rough draft to me last week?

If you haven’t done that yet send it to me by email so I can put it onto the blog post. If you want to look at everybody else’s rough drafts, that is where they are, on last week’s blog post. Go to where it says HERE up above and it will take you there!

So by now you have looked at lots of images of celestial bodies and you have drawn 4 rough drafts as well.

This week I would like to see 2 ideas for your own celestial bodies art work. You are NOT making the final art work yet. You are just working on 2 different ideas. How can you produce an artwork that has more than one celestial body in it? How can you put them together? Or perhaps you just want to create one of the celestial bodies? What will you use?

Fold a piece of paper in half so you have two spaces.

Draw up 2 different ideas for your final art work. You can use a bit of colour this time but REMEMBER this is NOT your final piece. This is just working on two different ideas!

What art materials will you use? Are you going to draw your final piece?

Pencils? Textas? Crayons? Oil pastels? Watercolour pencils?

Do you have any paint?

What have you got at home that you can use?

Perhaps you want to try to make a 3D artwork?

Playdoh? Plasticine or modelling clay?

Or you could make salt dough? But ask your parents permission first!

Salt Dough Recipe

Ingredients

  • I cup salt
  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1 cup hot water

Method

  1. Add salt and plain flour to a bowl gradually adding hot water. You might not need all the water!
  2. Mix together until a dough forms. Make sure it isn’t sticky.
  3. Leave your salt dough creations to air dry overnight. Then put your salt dough creations in the oven at 120 degrees Celsius for about 3 hours.
  4. When your salt dough creations are cool you can paint them. If you don’t have gloss paint and you want them to look shiny you can paint them with varnish when the paint is dry. If you don’t have any varnish just paint them with PVA glue. This will also make them nice and shiny.

What else have you got that you could use?

Lego? Other construction materials?

Scrap cardboard?

Anything else?

I am not asking you to rush out and buy materials to use for this task. Use what you already have at home.

And this week you are just coming up with 2 ideas, not actually doing the final piece. Do a drawing of your idea and write down what you think you might use to make it.  Do this TWICE!

And remember, it is OKAY to change your mind!

You need to think like an artist and not see changing your mind as making a mistake, because it is NOT. It is just that you came up with a better idea!

GRADE 5 REMOTE LEARNING VISUAL ARTS GALLERY 2020

Here you will find a gallery of artworks created by Grade 5 students at Cambridge Primary School over the past few weeks.

This includes any artworks created over the two weeks of the school holidays when these students were, like most of the rest of us, confined to home.

It also includes artworks created during Week 1 and 2 of term 2 2020. The Visual Arts task for Week 2 for all grade 3/4/5/6/E students was to think about the many creative ways the students have used their time over the past few weeks and to send me photos of these creative artworks. Perhaps they have been drawing, knitting, painting, making models, crocheting, making jewellery, printing, constructing, cutting, making collages, etc, etc, etc???

ART SHOW POSTER

My students had an opportunity to draw up a poster for the Cambridge Primary School Art Show which will be on the 23rd ad 24th October – yes, just a few weeks away!!!!!

And who doesn’t love glitter??? I certainly do! Well, I suppose Lucy, our wonderful cleaner, doesn’t like it much. And, as you can see, lot’s of it did end up on the hallway floor under where the posters were hanging on display.

GRADE 5 MONA LISA PARODY DRAWINGS

These interesting, amusing parodies of Mona Lisa were created by the Grade 5 students after they looked at several examples.

We looked at a large print of the Mona Lisa and discussed what the students knew about the painting.

  • The Mona Lisa is one of the most well known images in the whole world
  • Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa between 1503 and 1506 although some art scholars believe he worked on the painting as late as 1517
  • The painting is believed to be of Lisa Gheradini who was the wife of rich merchant Francesco del Giocondo.
  • King Francis I of France acquired the painting and it remains the property of the people of France and is on permanent display at the famous LOUVRE museum in Paris.
  • The grade 5 students also watched several, funny Sesame St videos, which were parodies of popular songs.

Then we discussed what a parody was and watched a few music parodies so the students could get a handle on the concept.  The obvious first place to look was Sesame St as almost every episode has some form of musical parody. The students had a good giggle at these.

Then we watched several videos by the uncrowned king of the musical parody, Weird Al Yankovic!!!

Once the students had an understanding of what a parody is they drew a 5-10 minute draft, in pencil, in their Art journal. The students then drew their parody on A4 cartridge paper and most used a photocopied face and hands of the Mona Lisa to complete their parody although this was their choice to use the photocopy or not.

The students then chose a complimentary background paper to form a frame around their work and decorated it to match the theme of their drawing.

I was astounded with the range of situations that poor old Mona Lisa could be put into!
