This is week 8 of Term 3 2020 and all my Grade 1  students are remote learning at home!

This week we are going to be doing some Visual Arts learning about PATTERN.

Last week you looked for PATTERNS around your house and then you drew them like this.

If you haven’t drawn your patterns yet go to the Grade 1 week 7 blog post for instructions.

This week I have a read aloud for you of Bronwyn Bancroft’s beautiful picture story book ‘Shapes of Australia’. It is full of  magnificent patterns and a feast for your eyes to devour!

READ ALONG WITH MRS MENHENNET PART 2

Oh that was just glorious to look at! All those wonderful Australian shapes decorated by author and illustrator Bronwyn Bancroft.

Now I have something special to show you. These are my new boots.

Yes, they have rainbows on them and yes, they are now called my ROY G BIV boots!

Do you like them?

 I LOVE them!

You currently have lots of PATTERN ideas in your head. Last week you looked all around your house searching for PATTERNS and this week you have looked at and listened to a beautiful story by Bronwyn Bancroft full of PATTERNS.

So let’s use all those PATTERN ideas floating around in your head. I want you to design a new pair of PATTERNED boots for me!

wow

Here is a drawing template of a boot that is similar to my ROY G BIV boots.

If you want to use this template you will have to copy it and then print it.

If you don’t have a printer available or you don’t want to print the template just draw up a large boot shape on a piece of paper and use that.

Will you cover the boot in one pattern or divide it up into sections and put different patterns in each section? What colours will you use?

I can’t wait to see what you come up with! I will make a folder called Visual Arts Week 8 on Class Dojo for your finished boot designs.

Have fun,

Mrs Menhennet

This week we are going to be doing some Visual Arts learning about LINE.

Here is a song about all sorts of lines.

READ ALONG WITH MRS MENHENNET Part 2.

Wow! What a fantastic song about lines!

Last week you drew all sorts of lines.  If you haven’t drawn your lines for last week yet you will need to go back to the Grade Prep week 7 blog post for your instructions.

This week we are going to do something a little bit different,

You will need a piece of paper. Any sort of paper will do.

You can use pencils,

or crayons,

or textas.

I want you to draw a star somewhere on your paper. I know stars can be tricky to draw but try your best.

When you have drawn your star I want you to draw a VERTICAL LINE joined to the bottom of the star. You have now drawn a magic wand!

wow

You are now going to draw all the magic streaming out of your magic wand using all different sorts of LINESCURVED LINES, WAVY LINES, ZIG ZAG LINES all the different sorts of LINES you can think of.

Make sure you use lots of different colours and LINES and you fill up your paper with all the magic! Don’t forget DOTTED LINES and SWIRLY, CURLY LINES!

I can’t wait to see these magic wands with their magic streaming out all over the place! I will put a folder on Class Dojo and Seesaw Called Visual Arts week 8 for your finished magical wand drawings.

READ ALONG WITH MRS MENHENNET!

This is week 7 of Term 3 2020 and all my Grade 2  students are remote learning at home!

This week we are going to be doing some Visual Arts learning about PAPER WEAVING.

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

I have a few videos for you to watch about paper weaving.

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

This first video has been made by a teacher called Mr Wedge.

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

Here is a link to Mr Wedge’s youtube channel in case you want to watch any more of his art teacher videos.

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

In the video above Mr Wedge folds and cuts his paper without drawing or ruling any lines on it.

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

If you would prefer to cut along some printed lines I have made a paper weaving loom template for you.

You will need to copy and print the template to use it.

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

You don’t have to print the template. I have provided it for you if you feel you want to use it but you don’t have to.

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

You can use whatever paper you have at home. If we were working in the art room I would give you coloured cover paper to use, like Mr Wedge has used in his video, as it is a little bit stronger than photocopy paper.

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

Remember this is PAPER weaving and PAPER tears very easily.

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

But, like I said,  you can use whatever paper you have at home.

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

The front cover of an old magazine would make a terrific paper weaving loom as it would be much stronger than photocopy paper. It would also make an interesting piece of weaving because the loom itself would be multicoloured.

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

The side of an empty cereal box would also make a strong weaving loom as it would be made of thin cardboard.

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

You also need to cut some long strips of paper to weave with.

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

They need to be as long as the weaving loom is wide. If they are longer and hang out the sides that doesn’t matter. They can be trimmed off later. If they are too short and don’t reach all the way across the weaving loom, your weaving will have gaps in it!

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

Again, it doesn’t really matter what type of paper that you use for your weaving strips but coloured or patterned paper will make your weaving look more interesting. Just make sure the strips are long enough to go right across your weaving loom.

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

Here is a video of me working in the art room at Cambridge Primary School with some grade 2 students teaching them how to do paper weaving. They are using a different paper template to the template I have put on this blog but that doesn’t matter. The way you weave is still the same.

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

The paper weaving video 2 and 3 show you how to finish off your paper weaving with a glue stick. There are 2 videos on how to finish as the filming was interrupted by students knocking on the classroom door as a student was filming me on my Ipad!

OVER UNDER OVER UNDER

So, now you have watched these videos I would love for you to have a go at doing some paper weaving.

I will make a folder on Edmodo for you to upload your paper weaving so I can look at it.

Your Specialists Rich Task was due at the end of last week. If you need the instructions for the Rich Task you can find them on the Week 5 blog post. If you can’t find the Week 5 blog post there is a link to it in the sidebar of the blog in the section called Recent Blog Posts.

This is week 7 of Term 3 2020 and all my Grade 1  students are remote learning at home!

This week we are going to be doing some Visual Arts learning about PATTERN.

There are patterns everywhere around us.

There are patterns in the park.

There are patterns in the supermarket.

There are patterns on a farm.

There are patterns at the market.

I am absolutely positive there are patterns in your house too!

Perhaps on the floor?

Or in the bathroom?

Hmm! I want you to go for a walk around your house and see how many patterns you can find.

I will wait right here until you get back. Take as much time as you need. You might want to make a list.

Are you surprised at how many patterns you found around your house?

wow

Well now you have had a good look at the patterns around your house I want you to draw 4 of those patterns. Perhaps you can draw your favourite patterns you found around your house?

Take a piece of paper,

any piece of paper will do, and fold it into four spaces.

So, fold the paper in half. Press on the crease and then fold it in half again. Press on the crease. You should now have a piece of paper with four spaces in which to draw.

fold paper into four

You can use pencils,

or crayons,

or textas.

Some people call textas, markers.

Draw a different pattern in each of the 4 spaces on your paper. FILL THE SPACE with your pattern.

If your pattern has lots of detail try to put as much of it into your drawings as you can.

I will put a folder on Class Dojo for you to put your 4 fantastic patterns in.

Your Specialists Rich Task was due at the end of last week. If you need the instructions for the Rich Task you can find them on the Week 5 blog post. If you can’t find the Week 5 blog post there is a link to it in the sidebar of the blog in the section called Recent Blog Posts.
