I can’t believe it is Week 7 of remote learning already!

We are going to be doing a bit of Visual Arts learning around the topic of the Worldwide Hexagon Project!

The WORLDWIDE HEXAGON PROJECT

is an art project that started in Scranton, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. in 2006 when some secondary school Visual Arts teachers got together over a coffee.

Those teachers wanted to come up with an idea that all their students could work on together and thus the Hexagon Project was born.

Now thousands of students from all over the world participate in this annual project.

Cambridge Primary School participates in the Worldwide Hexagon project every second year and has done since 2012.

The Worldwide Hexagon Project reflects on how we are all INTERDEPENDENT.

Most students easily understand the meaning of independence.

You start off as a baby not being able to do much and eventually learn to feed yourself and dress yourself as you learn and grow.

Once you start school you are developing as a child and a student and increasingly doing all sorts of things by yourself.

Being INTERDEPENDENT is how we all DEPEND ON EACH OTHER in different ways.

We are all –

  • local citizens (family, Cambridge PS, neighbourhood, Hoppers Crossing)

  • regional citizens (Werribee, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia)

  • global citizens

connected to and INTERDEPENDENT on each other for so many things and in so many ways!

How are you connected to others by your interdependence???

It is very clear that we all have a much greater understanding of our INTERDEPENDENCE in 2020 after being locked down at home in isolation for many weeks and having time to think about how much we rely on each other!

The WORLDWIDE HEXAGON PROJECT  for students from aged 4-18+ uses the shape of a hexagon as a way for students to reflect on their INTERDEPENDENCE in an artwork.

I want you to create an artwork, using whatever materials you like, in the shape of a hexagon, reflecting your understanding of INTERDEPENDENCE.

When your artwork is complete I want you to photograph your hexagonal artwork with your device and send it to me by Saturday 6th June 2020.

I will then mark that you have completed a hexagon shaped artwork onto Compass and this will become part of your Semester 1 report for 2020.

The hexagon template for your artwork is available here. You are encouraged to print this hexagon and trace it to use as a template so all hexagons are the same size.

I will then print up the photos of  all your hexagon shaped artworks and display them at Cambridge PS.

If YOU want your artwork to be part of the WORLDWIDE HEXAGON PROJECT for 2020 you need to upload the photo of your artwork onto Artsonia.  This is your choice. If you do not want to participate in the WORLDWIDE HEXAGON PROJECT you do not have to.

ARTSONIA IS READY FOR UPLOADING!

  1. Put your finished hexagon on a flat surface that is a different colour to your hexagon.

  2. Photograph your hexagon with your device holding your ipad flat and steady. Make sure you can see ALL your hexagon on the screen.

  3. Download the Artsonia app OR go to the Artsonia website.

  4.  Type in the access code NXRB-HBMR. Press login.

  5. Type your first name in the space provided. Your name will pop up with the first letter of your last name and your 2020 grade like this.      Shelley M (Shelley8939) Grade 4

  6. Click on your name  and you will be taken to a Welcome page.

  7. Click on add new artwork.

  8. Click on Hexagon Project 2020 for your grade level. Each grade level and Enrichment has it’s own project box .

  9. Click on the select image/video button to locate your photo on your device.

  10. Click upload now.

  11. Click accept.

  12. Give your hexagon a title.

  13. Click submit to teacher.

  14. You can enter an artist statement or press skip.

  15. Your hexagon image will appear and it will say that you have submitted your hexagon to your teacher for review.

Congratulations The uploading of your hexagonal artwork onto the Artsonia website must be completed by 30th June 2020 to be part of the WORLDWIDE HEXAGON PROJECT!

We are going to be doing a bit of Visual Arts learning around the topic of CELESTIAL BODIES in ART!

So, in Week 3 you drew a rough draft of four different celestial bodies. If you didn’t do this work go to week 3 here.

And in Week 4 you drew 2 ideas for a celestial bodies artwork. If you didn’t do this work go to week 4 here.

Now, in Week 5 and week 6, I would like you to create your final artwork for this unit of work. I want you to create a celestial bodies final artwork.

This artwork will require some thinking and some organising. So this artwork is due on Monday 24th May 2020!

In the past, my grade 3 students have created a celestial bodies artwork using clay like this.

This artwork involved-

  • deciding which of the celestial bodies you were going to create with

  • deciding how the celestial bodies were going to interact if the student was using more than one type of celestial body

  • deciding whether the celestial bodies claywork was going to be 3D and freestanding or flat

  • painting the claywork after it came out of the kiln

But you won’t be making a celestial bodies clay work in the art room.

In this time of remote learning we all have to adapt to creating at home.

How can you produce an artwork that has more than one celestial body in it? How can you put them together? Or perhaps you just want to create one of the celestial bodies? What will you use?

So you have lots of choice with how you create your celestial bodies artwork. However I want you to use more than one sort of material or one way of creating your art work. You have choices to make!

So perhaps you will draw,

or paint, or use oil pastels or chalk or watercolour pencils,

or use lego,

or make salt dough

Salt Dough Recipe

Ingredients

  • I cup salt
  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1 cup hot water

Method

  1. Add salt and plain flour to a bowl gradually adding hot water. You might not need all the water!
  2. Mix together until a dough forms. Make sure it isn’t sticky.
  3. Leave your salt dough creations to air dry overnight. Then put your salt dough creations in the oven at 120 degrees Celsius for about 3 hours.
  4. When your salt dough creations are cool you can paint them. If you don’t have gloss paint and you want them to look shiny you can paint them with varnish when the paint is dry. If you don’t have any varnish just paint them with PVA glue. This will also make them nice and shiny.

or use stuff from the kitchen drawers and cupboards

or stuff out of the laundry basket

This moon looks like it has been made using shaving cream!

We are going to be doing a bit of Visual Arts learning around the topic of CELESTIAL BODIES in ART!

So, in Week 3 you drew a rough draft of four different celestial bodies

Now, in Week 5, I would like you to create your final artwork for this unit of work. I want you to create a celestial bodies  artwork.

Did you email your rough draft to me last week?

If you haven’t done that yet send it to me by email so I can put it onto the blog post. If you want to look at everybody else’s rough drafts, that is where they are, on last week’s blog post. Go to where it says HERE up above and it will take you there!

So by now you have looked at lots of images of celestial bodies and you have drawn 4 rough drafts as well.

This week I would like to see 2 ideas for your own celestial bodies art work. You are NOT making the final art work yet. You are just working on 2 different ideas. How can you produce an artwork that has more than one celestial body in it? How can you put them together? Or perhaps you just want to create one of the celestial bodies? What will you use?

Fold a piece of paper in half so you have two spaces.

Draw up 2 different ideas for your final art work. You can use a bit of colour this time but REMEMBER this is NOT your final piece. This is just working on two different ideas!

What art materials will you use? Are you going to draw your final piece?

Pencils? Textas? Crayons? Oil pastels? Watercolour pencils?

Do you have any paint?

What have you got at home that you can use?

Perhaps you want to try to make a 3D artwork?

Playdoh? Plasticine or modelling clay?

Or you could make salt dough? But ask your parents permission first!

I am not asking you to rush out and buy materials to use for this task. Use what you already have at home.

And this week you are just coming up with 2 ideas, not actually doing the final piece. Do a drawing of your idea and write down what you think you might use to make it.  Do this TWICE!

And remember, it is OKAY to change your mind!

You need to think like an artist and not see changing your mind as making a mistake, because it is NOT. It is just that you came up with a better idea!

And that’s it!

Photograph your paper, with two different ideas on it, with your device, and email it to me.

GRADE 4 WEEK 3 REMOTE LEARNING CELESTIAL BODIES 2020

I can’t believe it is Week 3 of remote learning already!

 

We are going to be doing a bit of Visual Arts learning around the topic of CELESTIAL BODIES!

What are celestial bodies? Well CELESTIAL means relating to the sky or OUTER SPACE. So celestial bodies are planets, asteroids, stars and comets. It’s just a fancy name for them.

People have always been fascinated by what they see in the sky and they have used this for inspiration in their artworks.

Artworks have been made celebrating The sun and the moon and the stars for as long as people have been making art.

This is an ancient aboriginal rock painting  with the sun and stars.

Here are some artworks for you to look at that I put under the topic of celestial bodies.

Sometimes the artists use more than one at a time. For example they put the sun and the moon together.

Some artists have even made 3D sculptures of celestial bodies.

This is a link to my pinterest board with lots more celestial bodies for you to look at. There is metalwork, jewellery, felting, drawing, painting, clay work, sculpture, etc.

Now we’re going to do some drawing!

Take a piece of paper, any piece of paper will do, and fold it into four spaces. So, fold the paper in half. Press on the crease and then fold it in half again. Press on the crease. You should now have a piece of paper with four spaces in which to draw. You will just need a grey lead pencil to draw with.

Everybody should be ready to draw now.  You only need a grey lead pencil.

I DON’T want to see any COLOUR!

I don’t expect to see the best drawings you have ever done in your life. These are ROUGH DRAFTS. You are just practising and playing with ideas!

Please don’t be too hard on yourself and think you have made mistakes. DON’T USE A RUBBER! Just DRAW. I only want you to spend about 5 MINUTES drawing each of the 4 drawings. I would really like you to use your imagination and just go for it!!!

You need 4 sections because I want you to do 4 drawings!

Drawing 1 – Draw the sun. Try to give the sun some character.

Drawing 2 – Draw the moon. Is the moon full or only a half or a quarter? Perhaps it has a full body? Perhaps it has a neck, shoulders and arms?

Drawing 3 – Draw a star. Use your imagination.

Drawing 4 – Draw a group of celestial bodies together. How can you link them together? Are they holding hands? Are they leaning on each other?

When you have finished your 4 drawings –

  • put the numbers 1-4 on each one so I know which is which

  • put your name and grade on your paper

  • photograph your drawing using your device

  • email it to me            shelley.menhennet@education.vic.gov.au

  • That’s it!

Initially I showed the students a scribbly mock up I had done of what a finished cover COULD look like and then I demonstrated the simple ruling up of the different sections. The students DID NOT have to follow my layout though. As long as their cover demonstrated the seven elements of art and had a clearly readable title and their name and grade, they could use whatever layout they came up with.

I then asked one of my magnificent Art Ambassadors to come up with a grade 5 cover for me and Farheen did a fantastic job, in A3 size instead of A4, so it would be easy for the students to see after I clipped it onto the whiteboard. Brilliant! And of course, I forgot to photograph it! 🙁

I’ll update this post with a photo of it when I get back to school as we are on end of Term 1 holidays and won’t go back to school until after Easter. 🙂

I have found that I prefer to use student samples whenever I can. It makes a huuuuuge difference! It doesn’t matter how many times I tell the students that their artwork doesn’t have to look exactly like mine, and I give them plenty of options for choice, about 85% of artworks would look as close to my sample as possible. Always….. doesn’t matter what I say…… always!This is greatly reduced when I show a range of student created samples. This is one of the great benefits of photographing student artworks.

I was also surprised at how many students struggled with ruling up the cover that I demonstrated for them. And I did demonstrate it for them, once altogether and then at every table and then for many individuals that just weren’t getting it. They did not have to use my way of dividing up the A4 piece of paper to fit the elements of art in. They could do it any way they liked but few tried anything else, even though they were struggling to rule it up. They really couldn’t figure out how I ruled up the sections! It was like I was doing some amazing magic trick every time I demonstrated it!!!

These students are in Grade 5 and most of them had NO IDEA how to RULE A STRAIGHT LINE WITH A RULER! They didn’t even have to measure anything, just rule up straight lines diagonally from corner to corner. They actually had no idea how to put pressure on the ruler with the fingers of your hand without the pencil to hold the ruler still! I will use this video next time so I won’t need to be explaining it over and over and over again.

So this says to me that at Grade 5 level they had never done this before! How is that possible? Don’t they have to measure lengths in maths? Or rule up shapes? They certainly did the last time I taught maths and it wasn’t that long ago!

Well, ruler struggles aside, I will definitely be using this cover idea again for grade 5  as the students that persevered and finished their covers did a really fantastic job. These are artworks to be proud of! Thanks for looking and I know the students would love it if you left a comment!
