I can’t believe it is Week 6 of remote learning already!

We are going to be doing a bit of Visual Arts learning around the topic of CELESTIAL BODIES in ART!

So, in Week 3 you drew a rough draft of four different celestial bodies. If you didn’t do this work go to week 3 here.

And in Week 4 you drew 2 ideas for a celestial bodies artwork. If you didn’t do this work go to week 4 here.

Now, in Week 5 and week 6, I would like you to create your final artwork for this unit of work. I want you to create a celestial bodies final artwork.

This artwork will require some thinking and some organising. So this artwork is due on Monday 24th May 2020!

In the past, my grade 3 students have created a celestial bodies artwork using clay like this.

This artwork involved-

  • deciding which of the celestial bodies you were going to create with

  • deciding how the celestial bodies were going to interact if the student was using more than one type of celestial body

  • deciding whether the celestial bodies claywork was going to be 3D and freestanding or flat

  • painting the claywork after it came out of the kiln

But you won’t be making a celestial bodies clay work in the art room.

In this time of remote learning we all have to adapt to creating at home.

How can you produce an artwork that has more than one celestial body in it? How can you put them together? Or perhaps you just want to create one of the celestial bodies? What will you use?

So you have lots of choice with how you create your celestial bodies artwork. However I want you to use more than one sort of material or one way of creating your art work. You have choices to make!

So perhaps you will draw,

or paint, or use oil pastels or chalk or watercolour pencils,

or use lego,

or make salt dough

Salt Dough Recipe

Ingredients

  • I cup salt
  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1 cup hot water

Method

  1. Add salt and plain flour to a bowl gradually adding hot water. You might not need all the water!
  2. Mix together until a dough forms. Make sure it isn’t sticky.
  3. Leave your salt dough creations to air dry overnight. Then put your salt dough creations in the oven at 120 degrees Celsius for about 3 hours.
  4. When your salt dough creations are cool you can paint them. If you don’t have gloss paint and you want them to look shiny you can paint them with varnish when the paint is dry. If you don’t have any varnish just paint them with PVA glue. This will also make them nice and shiny.

or cardboard

or aluminum foil

or use stuff from the kitchen drawers and cupboards

or stuff out of the laundry basket

or other stuff

or all of those things

or something I haven’t even listed!

This moon looks like it has been made using shaving cream!

in how you create your artwork but I am NOT telling you to go out and buy stuff! Use what is already in your home! Don’t forget to ask permission to pull stuff out of cupboards to use or to make salt dough, or things like that.Email your photos to me when you have finished.

We are going to be doing a bit of Visual Arts learning around the topic of Vincent Van Gogh’s sunflowers in ART!

So, in Week 3 you drew a rough draft of four different sunflowers.

If you didn’t do this work go to week 3 here.

And in Week 4 you drew a rough draft of a vase of sunflowers. if you didn’t do this work go to Week 4 here.

Now, in Week 5 and Week 6, I would like you to create your final artwork for this unit of work. I want you to create an artwork of a vase of sunflowers.

This artwork will require some thinking and some organising. So this artwork is due on Monday 24th May 2020!

In the past, my grade 3 students have created a vase of flowers like this.

This artwork involved-

  • drawing a line across the paper to show the edge of the table

  • painting the background and the table clothgrade 3 van gogh sunflowers painting 64 2015

  • printing flower stems using a piece of scrap cardboard on its sidegrade 3 van gogh sunflowers painting 59 2015

  • making sure the stems weren’t all perfectly straightgrade 3 van gogh sunflowers painting 56 2015

  • making sure the sunflowers were not all just facing the frontgrade 3 van gogh sunflowers painting 54 2015

  • folding a piece of coloured paper in half and drawing half a vase on one side, cutting out the shape and unfolding it to form a vasegrade 3 van gogh sunflowers painting 51 2015

  • decorating the vase with buttons, beads, sequins, ribbon, paper and fabric scrapsgrade 3 van gogh sunflowers painting 35 2015

  • creating the last sunflower head with Model Magic, an air dry clay, gluing it onto the last stem and painting it so one of the flower heads was three dimensional.grade 3 van gogh sunflowers painting 28 2015

This sort of artwork is called mixed media because so many different sorts of materials and ways of creating are used at the same time to create a whole artwork.

But in this time of remote learning we all have to adapt to creating at home.

So you have lots of choice with how you create your vase of sunflowers this week. However I want you to use more than one sort of material or one way of creating your art work.

So perhaps you will draw

or paint

or use oil pastels

or use lego

or make salt dough

GRADE 4 WEEK 3 REMOTE LEARNING CELESTIAL BODIES 2020

I can’t believe it is Week 3 of remote learning already!

 

We are going to be doing a bit of Visual Arts learning around the topic of CELESTIAL BODIES!

What are celestial bodies? Well CELESTIAL means relating to the sky or OUTER SPACE. So celestial bodies are planets, asteroids, stars and comets. It’s just a fancy name for them.

People have always been fascinated by what they see in the sky and they have used this for inspiration in their artworks.

Artworks have been made celebrating The sun and the moon and the stars for as long as people have been making art.

This is an ancient aboriginal rock painting  with the sun and stars.

Here are some artworks for you to look at that I put under the topic of celestial bodies.

Sometimes the artists use more than one at a time. For example they put the sun and the moon together.

Some artists have even made 3D sculptures of celestial bodies.

This is a link to my pinterest board with lots more celestial bodies for you to look at. There is metalwork, jewellery, felting, drawing, painting, clay work, sculpture, etc.

Now we’re going to do some drawing!

Take a piece of paper, any piece of paper will do, and fold it into four spaces. So, fold the paper in half. Press on the crease and then fold it in half again. Press on the crease. You should now have a piece of paper with four spaces in which to draw. You will just need a grey lead pencil to draw with.

Everybody should be ready to draw now.  You only need a grey lead pencil.

I DON’T want to see any COLOUR!

I don’t expect to see the best drawings you have ever done in your life. These are ROUGH DRAFTS. You are just practising and playing with ideas!

Please don’t be too hard on yourself and think you have made mistakes. DON’T USE A RUBBER! Just DRAW. I only want you to spend about 5 MINUTES drawing each of the 4 drawings. I would really like you to use your imagination and just go for it!!!

You need 4 sections because I want you to do 4 drawings!

Drawing 1 – Draw the sun. Try to give the sun some character.

Drawing 2 – Draw the moon. Is the moon full or only a half or a quarter? Perhaps it has a full body? Perhaps it has a neck, shoulders and arms?

Drawing 3 – Draw a star. Use your imagination.

Drawing 4 – Draw a group of celestial bodies together. How can you link them together? Are they holding hands? Are they leaning on each other?

When you have finished your 4 drawings –

  • put the numbers 1-4 on each one so I know which is which

  • put your name and grade on your paper

  • photograph your drawing using your device

  • email it to me            shelley.menhennet@education.vic.gov.au

  • That’s it!

I had always wanted to do some sort of outdoor mural and Cambridge Primary School has so many boring blank walls that I had to come up with something.

I decided on a CD tree after seeing these trees at inspirational Coburn PS in Melton, Victoria.  Mel and Kate, the incredible art teachers at Coburn PS, invited me over to their school (well, actually, I think I might have invited myself) to have a look at ALL their outdoor murals and they have done plenty of them!

They are everywhere and add so much to the atmosphere in their play space. So much better than bare walls!

So I decided I would have a go at a CD tree. However, like most things I do, the idea seemed to get bigger and bigger. Which grade level would I do this with? Perhaps the 5s? Or maybe the 4s and the 5s? Well, if I was going to do it with the 4s and the 5s I might as well include the 6s and what about the 3s? So, of course, I am doing it with the whole school!!!!

That’s only 940+ CDs – aaaggghhhhh!!!

So there will definitely be more than one tree. Perhaps it will look a little bit like this? This is a CD tree mural from Reservoir West Primary School created by Max Darby.

And hopefully all the CDs will fit as tree foliage on the one wall! We’ll just have to wait and see.

Gabby and Mel, who teach Prep-2 Visual Arts, tackled their CDs and I tackled grades 3-6.

We used Viponds acrylic paint, which is deliciously bright and glossy, as recommended by Mel and Kate from Coburn Primary School, as it is suitable for outdoor murals and will last on the CDs. I was stunned when I realized that Viponds Paint is actually manufactured in Victoria, in North Coburg to be exact. Not all that far from where I grew up in Brunswick. It always feels good to support Victorian manufacturers! You can get it from Cavalier Art Supplies in Geelong or Zart Art in Box Hill.

It really is gorgeous paint and I discussed why we needed to use it with the students and the huge price difference between it and ordinary school acrylic paint. They were all very careful with it and, in fact, the grade 3-6 students used less paint than I actually thought they would.

I asked the students to paint a background colour on first, which was very quick with a fat brush. I had eight students fit around one painting table and then place their wet CD onto the painting rack which was now covered in newspaper so the CDs wouldn’t fall through the holes. As this was so quick and easy to do it was easily worked around all our other ongoing activities for each grade level.

The following week the students were given back their CD and, as we had done so much pattern work earlier in the year, I asked them to decorate their CD with pattern/s.

I was so impressed with the range of finished CDs and know they will look beautiful when the mural is finally put together. That’s job number 4,095,864,345 on my to do list!

And the Prep – 2 CDs are just as lovely as the 3 – 6 ones, as well as being strikingly different! I will share some of them when I grab some photos of them from Mel and Gabby.

And as for the CDs, I didn’t buy a single one! I just asked the Cambridge Primary School staff and community to clean out their DVD cupboards and their computer desks and send all their DEAD DISKS to me! DEAD being scratched, obsolete, not working, DVDs, CDs, game console disks, start up disks for 5 computers ago, can’t even remember where it came from disks, and we had more than 1000 in no time!

GRADE 1 SHAPE COLLAGES

 

These lovely geometric shape collages were completed by the Grade 1 children earlier this year.

I had done this sort of activity  several times in the Art Room over the years and I’m always amazed with what the children come up with.

I purchased the fantastic double sided cardboard mosaic pieces from Zart Art, which I had used before, including the lovely shimmery squares you can see in the butterfly above, and was thrilled to find they also had packs of patterned triangles which were new.

I was horrified to find the triangles came in sheets which I had to press out myself (as they were a little too delicate for the children to do if I wanted them to stay triangular!) so I spent one lunchtime breaking up the whole packet of sheets. This was quite a zen/bizarre/ almost therapeutic activity I found which wasn’t as time consuming as I thought it would be. Next time I’ll probably get some older helpers to do it for me so I don’t totally lose my mind! It was much better than cutting up triangles myself like I used to do!!!

I absolutely love the woolly sheep above! I found the circles and the blue/white squares with rounded corners in a box in the store room! Who knows where they came from but they must have been offcuts from something that were donated from a parents work place?!?!?! And I just love recycling!!!!

HANDS UP FOR ART!

I created this display with the hands made by the Grade 1’s to get the year started off with a lovely activity and a lovely display!

The children traced their hands and arms, or asked a classmate to do it for them and then decorated them with patterns using the zoom crayons.

The following week they painted their hand using watercolour cakes(or blocks, whatever you like to call them).  The grade 1’s had not used these before so needed to be taught to wash their brush when they were changing colours so the cake of watercolour did not become muddy.

I also insist that they look after the water pots themselves and if the water is too dirty they just go and empty it and refill the water pots themselves without asking me. This always results in a few water spills at the beginning (big deal, it is just water!) so we then discuss why the spill has occurred (rushing, too much water in the container) and what we do when they occur (put newspaper down immediately to help soak up the water and make the spillage more visible for others in the room and then clean it up as quickly as possible) and the spillages soon stop. It is all worth it in the end as I strive to make the children clean up after themselves. I am always stupefied by the number of children at Grade 1 level that have NO IDEA how to turn on a tap! This is all part of the learning process of being responsible artists!

I did not tell them that the crayon would resist the watercolour but waited until someone noticed it before we discussed it. “What’s happening here? Why isn’t the paint covering that crayon pattern?”

When they were dry cutting them out was the next challenge so I demonstrate how you can turn the paper while you are cutting slowly, a revelation for most grade 1’s, so you don’t just chop off all the fingers!

I ummed and aahed about how to display them and then settled on a circle. I layered them on the display board and tried NOT to staple the hands and fingers so they would move in any breeze that wafted past. I was going to put the sign in the top left corner in the middle but then found the bit of gold corrugated cardboard  in the scrap box, added some cupcake wrappers for eyes (we used to call them patty pans when I was a kid) and it turned into a beaming sun, so appropriate as the start of the year was so very hot!

WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH A CIRCLE?

I always like to start off the year with a drawing activity and this is what I came up with for the Grade 3’s this year.

They had to choose a coloured circle from the pile, any colour they liked. They could then paste it anywhere on their A4 piece of cartridge paper and then turn it into’ something?!?!?!?! using their imagination and their drawing skills. I told them that I wanted to be impressed by what they came up with as they were now in Grade 3 and I would not accept a drawing that didn’t have the background filled in. This then lead to a discussion about horizon lines, where the sky meets the ground or the buildings or whatever is in the way, and I threw in my old favourite question – “WHEN YOU LOOK OUT THE WINDOW CAN YOU SEE ANY WHITE PAPER????” No, because everything is filled in and there aren’t any gaps – well something along those lines anyway. There always seem to be a few nodding heads and “Eureka” looks on faces whenever that old question is aired so I keep asking it whenever this sort of discussion comes up.

And in the end I was quite impressed with their drawings and utterly stunned that I only got one Angry Bird – and he is quite cute. I thought that would be the first thing they would think of!

They used textas or zoom crayons to complete these drawings.

A few children asked if the could do something to the circle and the answer, of course, was yes. A few folded them and a few cut them.

I think this one might have been torn so the Ninja could see!

This gorgeous turtle has laid some eggs.

There were fewer sunsets than I though there would be. I like how the sun looks a bit sleepy!I was so surprised to see several Pacman drawings. I wouldn’t have thought these children would know that game at all!

When you lift up the green bird’s wing she has other little baby birds hiding under there – too cute!

This magnifying glass is enlarging the tiny ants walking across the grass from the left.
