This is week 8 of Term 3 2020 and all my Grade 2  students are remote learning at home!

This week we are going to be doing some Visual Arts learning about PAPER WEAVING.

Last week I asked you to have a go at doing some PAPER WEAVING like this.

The blue and white WEAVING above was done by Shaurya from 2E and the brown and blue WEAVING, making excellent use of some magazine pages, was done by Siddharth 2D.

If you didn’t do your PAPER WEAVING last week you will need to go to the blog post for Grade 2 Week 7 for instructions.

Here is a story about weaving called ‘The Goat in the rug’ by Geraldine.

Wow! Geraldine was the name of the goat and she told the wonderful story about her owner weaving a rug from her wool.

Even though Glenmae was weaving a very big rug she was still going over and under with the wool just like you do when you are paper weaving.

Paper weaving is a skill and you need to practice to improve your weaving skill.

So this week I want you to have another go at paper weaving.

BUT when you finish this week I want you to add something to your weaving to turn it into something else.

So you might turn it into a cow!

 

Or you might turn it into a crocodile!

 

Or you might turn it into a rocket!

Or you might turn it into a fancy quilt for a fancy bed!

 

Use your imagination and see what you can come up with!

And you might have some big paper bags at home that have been used to deliver shopping or take away to your house while you have been in lock down. The sides of a large paper bag are fantastic to weave through. You might like to try paper bag weaving instead.

I can’t wait to see what you come up with. I will create an assignment on Edmodo called Visual Arts week 8 that you can attach your finished week 8 weaving to.

This week we are going to be doing some Visual Arts learning about PATTERN.

Last week you looked for PATTERNS around your house and then you drew them like this.

This week I have a read aloud for you of Bronwyn Bancroft’s beautiful picture story book ‘Shapes of Australia’. It is full of  magnificent patterns and a feast for your eyes to devour!

Oh that was just glorious to look at! All those wonderful Australian shapes decorated by author and illustrator Bronwyn Bancroft.

Now I have something special to show you. These are my new boots.

Yes, they have rainbows on them and yes, they are now called my ROY G BIV boots!

Do you like them?

 I LOVE them!

You currently have lots of PATTERN ideas in your head. Last week you looked all around your house searching for PATTERNS and this week you have looked at and listened to a beautiful story by Bronwyn Bancroft full of PATTERNS.

So let’s use all those PATTERN ideas floating around in your head. I want you to design a new pair of PATTERNED boots for me!

Here is a drawing template of a boot that is similar to my ROY G BIV boots.

If you want to use this template you will have to copy it and then print it.

If you don’t have a printer available or you don’t want to print the template just draw up a large boot shape on a piece of paper and use that.

Will you cover the boot in one pattern or divide it up into sections and put different patterns in each section? What colours will you use?

 

I can’t wait to see what you come up with! I will make a folder called Visual Arts Week 8 on Class Dojo for your finished boot designs.

If you have already completed your rich task and uploaded all of your Specialist work here is one of my favourite stories for you to enjoy. It is called THE DAY THE CRAYONS QUIT by Drew Daywalt with illustrations by Oliver Jeffers.

The brilliant actor performing that read aloud of the story is Matt Chizever. His character voices for the different crayons are fantastic.

 

I tried really hard to find the same actor reading THE DAY THE CRAYONS CAME HOME without any luck. However, this actor does a great job of making the crayons come alive too. His name is Dave Edgren.

Hello to all my Grade 1 students from Cambridge Primary School and whoever else might be reading this post.

 

This is week 5 of Term 3 2020 and all my Grade 1 students are remote learning at home!

We are going to be doing a bit of Visual Arts learning around the topic of  colour!

 

  •  To revise the order of the colours of the rainbow.

  • To read along with Mrs Menhennet as she reads the blog post aloud.

  • To revise the instructions for the Specialists Rich Task.

  • For students to learn how to write a comment on my blog.

  • I know the order of the colours in the rainbow.

  • I can play the audio function  on the blog post and read along with Mrs Menhennet.

  • I understand the instructions for the Specialist Rich Task.

  • I can write a comment and post it on The Back art Room Blog.

    Let’s get started!

In Week 2 I asked you to draw a rainbow scene including the colours of the rainbow in order.

In week 3 I asked you to create a rainbow from found objects.

 

I have made folders on your grade’s Class Dojo page for you to upload photos of your creations for Week 2 and Week 3. These photos are evidence that you have completed this work.

Here are the Instructions for the Specialists Rich Task.

If you have already completed your Specialists Rich Task you can skip this bit. On the audio file you can press the fast forward button.

This Rich Task will require some thinking and some organising. You will need lots of time to complete it. So the Grade 1 Rich Task should be uploaded to your grade’s ClassDojo portfolio by the end of WEEK 6!

 

For this Grade 1 Specialists Rich task, you will create a character called ROY.G.BIV.

ROY G BIV needs to have a body.

A part of  ROY.G.BIV’s body must be in RAINBOW ORDER like his name.

ROY.G.BIV’s body also needs to include at least one PATTERN

You need to label ROY.G.BIV’s body  in Italian and English.

What is  ROY.G.BIV’s  name in Italian?

Use digital technology to enhance your rich task. You might use Keynote or another creative app or other digital tools you know how to use. You might photograph or video your rich task as you create it.

What will you use to create this rich task?

In the past, in the art room, my students have created ROY G BIV like this.

This artwork involved  –

  • Drawing a large face for ROY G BIV

  • Using coloured strips of paper for his hair in ROY G BIV order

He has also been created like this.

This artwork involved  –

  • Drawing a LARGE head, neck and shoulders for ROY G BIV to fill the space on the paper. (If I wanted you to draw ROY G BIV really small I would tell you to create your rich task on a tiny post it note!) DRAW BIG!

  • Using coloured strips of paper for his hair in ROY G BIV order

  • painting different parts of his body in particular colours

  • cutting out his mouth and giving him a colourful tongue

In this time of remote learning, as artists,  we are not working in the art room.

In this time of remote learning, as artists, we all have to adapt  and change to creating at home.

So you won’t be able to create your ROY G BIV in exactly the same way that it has been made before.  And that really doesn’t matter. You will all be brilliantly creative artists at home!

So I am giving you  lots of CHOICE with how you create your ROY G BIV.

So perhaps you will draw with oil pastels or pencils or textas or crayons

or paint with a brush

or paint with  sponges

 

or print with objects

or paint with watered down food colouring

or use play doh

or make your own play doh or salt dough

Salt Dough Recipe

Ingredients

  • I cup salt
  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1 cup hot water

Method

  1. Add salt and plain flour to a bowl gradually adding hot water. You might not need all the water!
  2. Mix together until a dough forms. Make sure it isn’t sticky.
  3. Leave your salt dough creations to air dry overnight. Then put your salt dough creations in the oven at 120 degrees Celsius for about 3 hours.
  4. When your salt dough creations are cool you can paint them. If you don’t have gloss paint and you want them to look shiny you can paint them with varnish when the paint is dry. If you don’t have any varnish just paint them with PVA glue. This will also make them nice and shiny.

and what about the found object rainbow from last week?

Perhaps your found object rainbow could be ROY G BIV’s body? You could add more objects to create a head, legs, arms, hands, feet and create a found object ROY G BIV?

Imagine if the artworks below were created in rainbow colours?

So you could use some of these things

or all of these things

or something I haven’t even listed!

I am giving you lots and lots and lots of choice

in how you create your rich task

I am NOT telling you to go out and buy new art materials to use!

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!

You need to THINK about what you already have at HOME and HOW you can use it.

 

Don’t forget to ask permission to pull stuff out of cupboards to use, or to make salt dough, or things like that.

· And, of course, tidy up after you have created!!!

Your VISUAL ARTS TASK FOR WEEK 5 is to write a comment on my blog about the story.

It is easy to write a comment on my blog. Don’t forget to use capital letters and full stops.

At the end of this blog post you will find a section titled,

LEAVE A COMMENT (or add a comment if nobody else has written one yet!)

Under that is a large box in which you type your comment. It looks like this. You can’t write in this one, Silly. You have to use the box at the bottom of this post.

After you have written your comment there is an anti spam box. The anti spam box is there to prove you are a real person not just a computer bot generating random comments. You need to copy the text from the anti spam box into the other box, just like in the photo below.

 

Then you type your name into the name box. Don’t forget to tell me which grade you are in.

In the next box you type your email address. If you don’t have an email address then you can ask someone from your family if you can use their email address.

Click on the little square at the bottom and you will get an email when I write the reply to your comment.

Finally click on the button that says POST COMMENT and you will have successfully written a comment.

ART SHOW 2013 GRADE 1 THE COAT DRAWINGS

These photos are of the hall display I did earlier and the drawings mounted and on display at the Cambridge Primary School Art Show.

I read THE COAT by Julie Hunt to the Grade 1 children as part of celebrating the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book Week in the Art Room. They were mesmerised by the story and the illustrations, by Ron Brooks, are divine. Ron Brooks illustrated The BUNYIP OF BERKLEY”S CREEK as well as lots of other Australian children’s titles. Thhis book went on to deservedlywin Australian Picture Book of the Year 2013!

 

After immersing themselves in the story and having a great discussion about the fabulous illustrations we talked a bit about how fantastic it would be to fly through the sky in a magical coat. The children then drew their own head and neck onto a coat shape I provided them with. They could decorate the coat in any way they liked and they were so excited to add some sequins to it as well! Such a simple thing but they just thought it was so special! I love the picture below with the flying ponytail!

The next step was to cut their coat drawing out very carefully, ensuring they didn’t hack off the head or the feet, and put it aside to start the background. Drawing from a bird’s eye (or a person flying in a magical coat) point of view is tricky when you are in Grade 1.

 We looked at photos and maps and drawings I found on pinterest and google for inspiration, we talked about what they would see if they flew over their house, or the school, or the MCG (the Melbourne Cricket Ground, an iconic Melbourne institution, where footy and cricket are played, and other events held, in our sports mad Capital city, so it was familiar to most of the children) and most of the children seemed to be able to articulate what they would see and what it would look like when they drew it. I love that you look at the back of his headas he is flying in the drawing below!

 I have to admit, when it came to the execution it was really tricky. Some of them started out with a bird’s eye view but then as they found something tricky to draw they would revert to a straight on aspect. Some of them just drew a picture from a straight on, normal view from the start, even if it was very detailed.

But boy, when they GOT IT, wow, they well and truly GOT IT!!!

 

I am so proud of all their attempts as nearly all the children said they thought they were the best drawings they had ever done!

BOOKWEEK

We have been enjoying some of the wonderful books shortlisted by the Children’s Book Council of Australia for 2013, in the Art rooms. The Prep children made beautiful sunflowers for PEGGY, by Anna Walker, to follow home! I can’t wait to get them up on display. And just wait until you see the fantastic drawings the grade 1 children have done in response to the Picture Story book of the year – THE COAT by Julie Hunt!

The illustrations by Ron Brooks are wonderful and the children were mesmerised by the fantastic story!

 And do you remember last year, we read the gorgeous book, A FOREST, and made a beautiful forest display in the hallway, and I wondered why such a stunning book had been left off the 2012 Picture Book of the Year shortlist??? That was because it was shortlisted for 2013! It is quite an achievement for Marc Martin to be short listed with his first ever picture fiction book!

A SECIAL REPORT BY OUR NEW REPORTER                                             AMARLEA CRAIG  2B

Hi, my name is Amarlea Craig from 2B. On the 23rd of August I went to the “Monet’s Garden” exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria. There were lots of people and the gallery was very big. Some of the paintings were big and all of them were magical. My favourite painting was a round painting with water lilies in a golden frame. At the end of the exhibition we sat in a round theatre. It showed footage of Claude Monet’s house and the garden in Giverny from day to night. We saw the different rooms in the house and the garden with lots of trees and plants and the lake with the famous Japanese bridge. It was amazing and very beautiful. There was also a really cool gift shop.

Art room helpers  – If you would like to help out in the Art room just come and see me and we will book a time that suits you. You don’t have to book in for the time that your child is in the Art room and you don’t need any special skills, just a willingness to help out, and some time to do it. It will give you the opportunity to experience one of our specialist programs up close! The grade 3 children are hand stitching on paper and fabric at the moment so some extra hands to help with knots and tangles during these sessions would be most appreciated.

DONATIONS – Thank you for all the donations that keep arriving at the main art room.  We love to reuse and recycle! I cut up a pile of mostly yellow printed paper that was donated a while ago and the Prep children used this paper to make their sunflowers.  We still need –

  • Paint sample cards
  • Wallpaper offcuts and samples
  • Old CLEAN toothbrushes (they are great for adding slip to clay joins!)
